By The Numbers: Literally - Running After Babies

Today’s number is TWO!

I have maintained my love of the Pig (obviously) and shared that with my two children.  They know this is a family affair and I love making these memories with them.

My daughter just turned 5 and my son is 3 today!!! They each have their own collection of medals, as they have participated in the Piglet since they were just shy of a year old, and have joined me and other family members on various 5Ks.  They have been with me to support their uncle and cousins in races, and have tagged along for some stroller run/walks in the neighborhood.

My son was barely a month old at his first Pig, and he wasn’t too impressed.  However, the next year, he was all in!  He is also a speed demon and will literally put his arms behind him when he wants to go faster so he is more aerodynamic.  I honestly have few pictures of him from the front because I am always chasing him! Watch out, world!

My daughter is also a really fast runner and we joke she doesn't walk anywhere.  It’s kind of true.  She moves.  She’s recently been talking more about “her race” and is looking forward to Pig weekend this year.

We hope they gets into the sport ahd have dad’s genes of speed but mom’s genes of pure stubbornness. As they get older, I am going to encourage them to participate in the 26th Mile and for my daughter, another amazing program - Girls on the Run.

Another neat thing to share is the friendships that have formed from this shared interest.  Shortly after my daughter was born, I received a message from a woman I’d ran with a few times and knew through running group – would I be interested in a box of size 1 diapers?  Her son had already outgrown them and she saw I’d recently had a baby.  I said yes, she dropped the box on my porch, and then we decided to be Pandemic Walking Friends, babies in tow.  It was April/May of 2020, so COVID restrictions were in full swing.  But we could be outside and social distance and get out of the house and move and have a friend who was in the COVID newborn trenches with us!  To this day, that mama and her little boy are great friends of ours and we have shared many milestones – and Pigs! – together, and I look forward to continuing the tradition!

It doesn’t have to be running, but it’s so neat to see your child(ren) interested in the thing you’re interested in.  And bonus points that it is a positive event that moves your body and challenges your mind!

Keep running with me,

Kelsey
